Carrots
If carrots are like icebergs, and
You care for them just right,
Then weeds look just like iceberg heads
And lettuce needs re-named—
But if you and I were children once
Who tended to some patch,
We ate the meaty fruit of those
In our foggy minds contained—
And learned of love and hunger both
Through clever metaphors
Relating human hair to leaves
And love and lust to flesh—
Then we are just like them, you see
For sweet and tender hearts,
With dirt and mud upon our roots
And sunshine on the rest.
